Verkís provides consultancy services for traffic noise conditions and acoustic design as well as the production of noise maps by means of measurements and calculations. Traffic noise conditions are an important factor in the design of road systems and building projects near streets that carry heavy traffic.

In order to assess traffic noise, direct measurements are taken, or noise propagation is calculated using a 3D traffic-noise simulation model. Development of a simulation model for roadway noise began in the Nordic countries in the late 1980's. Software such SoundPLAN Noise and NovaPOINT Støy are based on that model and can calculate noise levels with a high degree of accuracy.

The prerequisite for calculating roadway noise levels is knowledge of traffic volume and speed, and the ratio of heavy vehicles in traffic. Distance from the noise-emission source, landscape conditions, and the position of buildings and other structures also influence the noise damping and reverberation, and the model takes all of these factors into account in its calculations. Traffic noise forecasts can be drawn up for planned road construction or the modification of existing roads, and various mitigating measures can be tested in the design phase. In this way, national and local governments can obtain advice on the phased introduction of noise-mitigation measures in line with population growth and the concurrent increases in road traffic.
